In this edition of Ask Josh!™ we answer a question from “aaron”, who is an asshole. He submitted the question here. You can submit your questions too, and preferably you’re not an asshole too.

Josh,

Im considering breaking up with my girlfriend but Im unsure. Shes perfect for me in almost every way, but I wish she could be more outgoing in daily activities (Shes quiet and never cares what we do) and bed (she usually just lets me do everything).

It would be better if she initiated some “activites” or would be “sexier” for me. I want to break up because i want to find someone closer to perfection then her, but if i do i cant go back and may regret my decison. This is a 2 part question, should i stay with her, and if so how do i tell her to be more outgoing?

thanks for your time

Josh says: You do not realize the possibility that you might never have anything better than her right? Here’s a 2 part retort to your 2 bit question. And yes, I am trying to be helpful even while judging you.

Guys like you are presumptuous assholes. I don’t know if you’ve had the benefit of having many choices for your whole life, but I seem to be getting the impression that you don’t, and you got lucky with this girl.

You seem ungrateful for something which sounds pretty damn good already. It’s like asking God for cheese dip to go along with your manna from heaven. Or getting a Porsche for your birthday, and whining because you didn’t get a pair of sports rims to go with it.

Anyway…

An appropriate visual aid. In this picture of Maria Ozawa, she looks a bit like Megan Fox.

An appropriate visual aid. In this picture of Maria Ozawa, she looks a bit like Megan Fox.Don't you think?

“should I stay with her?”

Yes, as long as she can stand being with you. Assuming you’ve been with her for a long time, do you honestly think there is an infinite world of better girls out there?

You do realize there is some kind of balance to life right - let’s say you find a more outgoing girl, chances are she will be not as attractive as your first one.

Or if you find one better in bed, chances are she might not be as faithful to you.

If there weren’t a balance to life, we would all be dating Megan Fox / Maria Ozawa lookalikes with great personalities, awesome in bed, but somehow still faithful and submissive.

Let’s face it. While a lot of us might want perfection, the majority of us (99.9999999999%) of us will never get to have sex with Megan Fox. Or in Maria Ozawa’s case, perhaps 99.999% will never get to have sex with her.

And really, which part of “she usually just lets me do everything in bed” is a problem???

If you need spontaneity, why don’t you give her a few suggestions, and then tell her to randomly do one the next time you do it. There’s always this too. You can read this too - Ask Josh “I no longer find my girlfriend sexy…”.

If your girlfriend looked like this, do you really care if she can get along with your friends or not? Seriously!

If your girlfriend looked like this, do you really care if she can get along with your friends or not? Seriously? Would you care? Seriously!

“how do i tell her to be more outgoing?”

This requires her changing her fundamental personality. Sure, it may be great to have a girlfriend you can bring out more often to meet more friends, but do you really need it?

There are some ways though - perhaps bring her to Toastmasters, or bring her to more parties, and see if it awakens a more sociable side of her. Functions with alcohol helps.

But if you do it for a few weeks and you find it doesn’t work, just give up.

Remember, more outgoing also means more likely to cheat on you.

Perhaps she can’t be changed.

Perhaps she doesn’t need to be changed.

And perhaps, she’s good enough for you as she is right now.

But are you good enough for her?

“Those who feel offended by the praising of others or the rebuke of no one in particular, often have deep rooted insecurities about themselves.”

ENGLISH VERSION:

It’s not a giant leap of imagination that praising certain thing’s attributes does not mean that other things are inadequate. Neither does a statement that could apply to a lot of people, apply directly to you. Nothing wrong saying you don’t like something or praising something right? No need to take it personally.

I remember a mini blog/forum war that erupted over me. Think it was about 4 years ago. It was due to me doing a guest post on this female blogger’s blog (it used to be a pretty popular blog, you won’t be able to find this post). In the post I referred to some people “as sad people who have nothing better to do than read this all day”. For some reason, some forum people (the forum is gone now btw) took offense. Okay, so they were big fans of this female blogger la.

But seriously…Hello! Not talking about you. Why you “terasa?”

The forumites then started discussing my personal life, speculating if I was romantically involved with the blogger, my parents, my web design business and how to “gunny sack” me and whack me up. It was freaking hilarious. Even more funny than the time I had a gay admirer openly professing his love for me on the Klue message boards. I was doing theatre that time, which is understandable, but that is a story for another time.

This is why you shouldn’t take offense for no reason. It’s like this, here’s an example:

This is a SOHAI driver. Pic from <a href=

Figure 1: This is a SOHAI driver. Pic from ahfook.krova.com

*Teacher walks into class*

Teacher: All the SOHAI in the class, please stand up!
Ah Beng: *Stands up angrily* Why you call me a SOHAI!
Teacher: Aiyo…who say you are a SOHAI, you’re a SOHAI only because you stood up! Aijojo!
Ah Beng: “…” *nothing to say*

Lesson to learn: It may not apply to you, people might not even be talking about you…unless you say it.

Or to give another example:

This other girl was pretty popular too back then. She was a Malay female blogger blogging under a pseudonym (that you wouldn’t know unless you read the BM version, hint). At some point we were dating. She was hot, but that is irrelevant. Anyway, she once wrote about how much she hates mullets. You know, “rempit / redneck” style hair.

The post got lots of comments. One even went as far as to e-mail her: “But what’s wrong with my hair!??!”

Lesson to learn: So what if she doesn’t like your hair. It doesn’t apply ONLY to you, and she is entitled to her opinion. And it’s not as if she said it specifically about you, she said it about a group of people.

Please learn a lesson from these examples. Don’t take offense if you’re not supposed to. Don’t take something directed at a group of people personally. Because you end up looking stupid lah, and it’s usually your loss.

Sepatutnya, mereka tak perlu ambil hati atas perkara macam ni. Bukannya katakan mereka pun, betul tak?

Contohnya:
*Cikgu masuk kelas*
Cikgu: Semua budak yang bermuka cibai, sila berdiri!
Abu: *Berdiri terus dengan marah* Kenapa kamu kata muka saya macam cibai!
Cikgu: Aduhai, kenapa kamu berdiri…saya kata hanya mereka yang bermuka cibai berdiri!
Abu: “…” *tak ada apa untuk cakap”

Ini yang dipanggil “terasa”. Ambil tunjuk ajar: Bukannya kamu…selain kamu berkata adalah kamu!

Satu lagi contoh:

Gaya rambut "mullet".

Figure 2: Gaya rambut "mullet".

Aiyo. Janganlah kisah tentang perkara macam ini.

Ambil tunjuk ajar: Jangan rasa kecil hati. Perempuan tu kata dia tak suka stail rambuat “mullet”.

Here’s a few things I’ve discovered online recently…

From <a href=

Ever done this before? Flipped a coin? Btw “heads” (for Malaysian coins at least) is the side with an illustration covering the majority of the coin face. In the US, they usually have pictures of former presidents heads on the coins, hence it’s called “heads”.

On a related note, I have tossed a coin and got heads 10 times in a row before. Yes, I was asking on the answer to something. Freaky huh?

When faced with a difficult decision with two possibilities, flipping a coin might be just as good as long thought about it (and faster). I met two people once with very conflicting opinions on how to make decisions:

- One believed that it is best to make a decision fast, because anyway, “anything after you’ve made the decision is post-rationalization”.

- Another believed that its best to take time to make a decision, even if you lose money over it as the additional time bought to make the decision is worth it.

Which would you agree on?

And something else, that’s always been there and you might not have realized about your humble mouse (assuming it has three buttons). Yes, the wheel is a button as well. And did you know it can do something special?

qky7w

The one above…so obvious, but I didn’t know until now. And I bet many people don’t! This should save me quite a bit of time when I’m browsing on my Streamyx / Firefox. I usually have about 8-10 tabs open…and quite frequently have to scroll the tab lists. This may make me spawn even more tabs. Hahah. More helpful hints soon!

Adakah kamu Mat Rempit? Okay, you lihat kat kamu punya kapchai - adalah ia berjenama Honda?

Sekian, terima kasih banyak-banyak, kawan-kawan kecil!

Josh Lim, Hannah Tan. I'm the one on the left that's not a cute celebrity.

So recently I met Hannah Tan for dinner in Bangsar…yeah I know what you’re going to say “pics or it didn’t happen!”. Got pics. Here. Nah. Pics from Hannah’s blog actually :)

So anyway for those of you that don’t know who Hannah Tan is - she’s a model, emcee, and artiste. Also, Malaysia’s Sexiest Woman 2006 with brains to boot - she has a degree in Computer Science.  She’s also recently invaded Japan, being one of the first few (if not the first) Malaysian to produce and debut an album in Japan. RM6 mil deal wei!

She’s also the driving force behind the H-Factor Creative Youth Workshops that were held last year. Advertlets was a media sponsor for the event, and I must say that personally I think the event turned out very well.

So, here’s what Hannah told me…

She’s Having A Christmas Concert!

She’s having a special charity concert together with other local artistes to benefit disadvantaged children this December 20th in Genting Highlands. Keep that date free, because Hannah Tan asked you to! We’ll be working out an arrangement for you bloggers to get to go, perhaps even arrange a bus to all go up together!

PS: This concert hasn’t been announced yet officially, but she says it’s okay for me to post this up :)

She’s starring in a new movie, coming out soon!

Kuala Lumpur’s biggest Twitter gathering/party, Twestival KL was held recently and I was there! Look carefully, the handsome one in the center above, dark glasses, right below the girl with the hat.

Check out more photos @smashpop's blog.

The event attracted over 200 people and raised about RM11,000 for Destiny Starting Point, the chosen charity for the event. TwestivalKL is part of the global Twestivals.

What are Twestivals? A Twestival or Twitter-Festival is a global series of events organized by volunteers around the world under short timescales, which bring people offline for a great cause.  Twestival is run 100% by volunteers and independently from any not-for-profit; although the organizing teams do work closely to outline an achievable and measurable fundraising target.  Twestival also sets out to identify key skills of volunteers and match these with the needs of the cause; particularly communications strategy, tech integration and social media training.  Twestival Local takes place in cities around the world : 10-13 September 2009. From: http://twestival.com/twestival-local-2009/

So what do people do at these gatherings?

  • Camwhore! Many DSLRs, cameraphones and point and shoot cameras were seen.
  • Tweet! Check it here: #twestivalkl
  • Eat & Drink: 1901 Hotdogs, New Zealand Natural Ice Cream (my fav), Tiger Beer
  • Talk: Because it’s fun to talk in real life too!

So…in conclusion:

I’m surprised how many people there I knew who tweet. Including those that I follow, and those that I didn’t know who tweeted.

Strangely enough, I did not tweet while there (though I did add someone to my follow list). In the interest of not letting Twitter take up all my free time, I mainly only tweet from the web (not on my mobile).

All in all, it was a great event for a great cause.

Congratulations to @nikicheong, @ling_chan, @radianceleong, @suanie and more (I don’t know all your names, unfortunately) for a job well done organizing the event. Also thanks to the sponsors: @1901HotDogs, @AirAsiaBlog, @AirAsiaDotCom, @BoostMalaysia, @CzipLee, @DiGi_Telco, @Lenovo_MY, @littletrinketco, @MistClubBangsar, @nznMY, @pokenasia, @RawPixelStudios, @StarbucksMY, @Text100MY, @TheCupcakeChic, @TheStar_RAGE

So yeah. I made a list of what I like to eat, off the top of my head. Not to actually eat off the top of my head (I prefer to use a plate). What’s yours? Let me know if you share some of my favourites! Check it out below:

joshmy_liketoeat

I’m doing this to work out a monthly menu for myself - I’m trying to eat out less OR eat better, and looking into a way to have “home cooked” or “catered” food prepared each month. It dawned upon me there’s no catering service in where you can request a custom menu, so it got me thinking - let’s make a list of what I like, and see if I can get it sorted. And no, of course I’m not at the level to afford a personal chef. Haha.

Why don’t you make a list of what you like to eat (this could be a new blog meme, lol)…it tells you something about yourself! Here’s what I’ve learnt:

  1. So far its good to note that most of the things I like are somewhat healthful. Tip of the day (use this to impress your friends) - it is incorrect English to say “healthy breakfast”. The correct term is “healthful”, as in “healthful breakfast”.
  2. I’m not a big fish eater, and when I do eat it, I usually eat it raw (sashimi).
  3. I’m not adverse to vegetables.
  4. I could probably adapt to a Mediterranean or Japanese diet.
  5. Seeing this list, I could probably cut down on sugar quite a bit seeing there aren’t many sweet items here. My main sugar intake seems to be from caffeinated or carbonated drinks.

To do: Create a more comprehensive list that includes breakfast, snack and dessert items. Thanks to Rebecca for the scan!

Oh and btw I would like to welcome myself back to blogging, after about 2 weeks of not doing so. A lot has been going on, including the recent The Ugly Truth movie screening, various parties and…and…a new Advertlets partnership that I will be announcing soon. Stay tuned :)
