Been a while since I updated this. Let’s just recap on what’s been happening recently, before I attempt to come up with a more regular schedule. I won’t even try arranging them in sequence, but let’s just say that it was between February - April 2012.

First off, as of March this year…Advertlets is now 5 years old! That’s a while! Like if you take a 5 year old kid, that’s 99CM! More than half your current height (I often use this metaphor as a point to illustrate the passing of time). On a side note, when I first started Advertlets on 9th of March 2007, I was 24 years old. Now, I am still 24 years old. Isn’t that amazing?

Below: I cut my hair yeah. Like it? Also lost some weight. I’ve started on personal training…trying to up my sessions to twice a week at least but my schedule (and two bouts of falling sick) doesn’t really help. Below is me and some pretty ladies as usual at the Mercedes-Benz Stylo Fashion Grand Final 2012.

The below picture is at the Zouk @ Sepang rave with headliner Afrojack (who did not have an Afro, or was named Jack. But he played a really good set). Also, notably, it is the first time I’ve met a girl with a Japanese name that turned out to be actually…Japanese! She’s in the picture. Can you guess who?

That’s us at the launch of Sold.my - put together with Advertlets Blogger and psychologist / emcee / model / blogger extraordinaire Choo Mei Sze. Quite happy that its a first - an event we put together not just for bloggers, but the media as well.

advertlets-timeline-fb-feb2012

So well, my bestest and fattest friend Jason Ong celebrated his 22nd birthday…it was an amazing mix of bloggers and good looking people, and above all, friends. To tell the truth I really feel pressured to top it with my upcoming birthday in August.

Mandy Chan celebrated her birthday too! Honestly it always makes me happy when our bloggers hang out on their own accord, not cause they are forced to :) And, low or high traffic blogger, everyone’s mostly nice to each other, and I’ve seen quite a few genuine friendships (and relationships) develop. Say no to elitist blogger cliques!

There was the Johnnie Walker parties. Good as usual - how could it be anything otherwise? Advertlets Blogger Audreypuiyan won the grand prize, so we got to party in style, and she got to meet Jensen Button on stage too :)

On the work side, notably this month I was happy to be part of two things :

- The Cradle Coach & Grow program as a mentor/advisor with MATRADE and Cradle. Imagine meeting 10 clients in 1 whole day, finding out what they do, and advising them on how social media can help their business. It was an exhausting experience, but a fulfilling one.

- Speaking on social media at a private conference on brand building. It’s been a while since I’ve done some public speaking, good to know I’m not rusty!

Oh, and there’s one blog post that is no longer here btw. It wasn’t removed because it wasn’t true. Every word was. One word - mercy. That, and the hope that some people can actually change, once they’ve learnt there are some things they can’t get away with.

Lastly, here’s something random. When was the last time you saw something which was both racist AND adorable? And before you say anything, its okay for me to post this because I’m Chinese, and I admit, we eat anything, seriously.

Toodles, peoples! The next blog post will hopefully be here in 1-2 days. There are hundreds of you that come here each day to see old content purely through the fact that my site is well SEO-ed, but I hope to give you new content regularly, because that’s the whole point of blogging la. Isn’t it ironic that as the founder of a blogging company, my work barely leaves me time to blog?

You can encourage me with comments on this blog post, or seductive private messages to my social network accounts urging me to reveal more of my mystique.

About Donovan Chan…

General March 31st, 2012

The entire fiasco between me and Donovan Chan has been solved and was a terrible misunderstanding. Donovan has of now, purchased the laptop from me as of today. Thanks and let’s not have many comments on this. We apologize to friends, families and clients whom have been dragged into this.

You’ll also find a statement from Donovan Chan here.

Check out my entry for the Petronas Reimagining Energy Chinese New Year Photography contest! Recently a couple of us Advertlets Bloggers and friends got together for an open house. It’s a laughably small yee sang plate, but you can feel the energy from all of together, can’t you? :)

petronas-josh

Feel free to vote - it’s not the best one there, but hopefully good enough to make it to Galeri Petronas perhaps?

To vote, go to this Facebook App, and Look for Josh under the Gallery > Search > Professional Category.

You’ll probably be seen the banners for KLMU’s “Discover U” campaign running on Advertlets banners. And if you pay attention in cinemas, you probably know the KLMU song too :) But this post isn’t about that - here’s what its about in summary: school leavers make their way to the “Discover U” website where they could take a course personality test, discover what they are suited for, and ultimately win an iPad 2.

Needless to say, the campaign drew a huge success and saw a 400% surge in enrolment. The Internet quiz contest was officially launched on 6th October. 1, 200 registrations later, and one Mohd. Shabiy Nukhari, a business and management student, emerged victorious. His outstanding entry reads: “When I finish my studies, I want to get more experience about my career and also practice what I study at this institution. After that, I want to have my own business.

The best part, he says? Is that the personality test provides accurate matches to which career best suits the individual making it a pre-requisite for any fresh school leaver still undecided on which Yellow Brick Road to follow.

First phase: complete!

For the handful of you who missed out on the opportunity, fret not. Phase two of “Discover U”: initializes! Back by popular demand, is the online quiz contest – and this time, entries will be accepted all the way up till 30 March 2012. Here you are; another shot at winning yourself (or a loved one) an iPad 2! All you need to get cracking in on is a creative slogan entry besides participating in the “Discover U Course Personality Quiz” online, of course.

image6

Oh, yeah and just FYI; enrolling early with KLMU has its perks. Namely, scholarships worth RM 1,000. See, with KLMU’s “Discover U” campaign, everybody’s a winner – regardless of whether or not you choose to take part in the contest. Head on over to www.discoveru.com.my right now or simply SMS KLMU DBG <space> NAME <space> STATE to 36600 for more information.

Here’s solutions to some common problems that most people may face now that they have to deal with the ‘crisis’ of the new Facebook layout. Your first thoughts of seeing the new layout were probably:

  • Hey, the Facebook bar stays fixed! (Cool!)
  • Er, where are the friends I care about? (They’re there, but hidden)
  • Argh, wtf! (You have my sympathies)
  • How do I change the Facebook layout back to how it used to be? (And now you can…at least partially. Read on!)

Here are solutions to some common problems…

“I see only recent stories, and not top stories”

Solution: Ever since the layout redesign, Facebook needs to start ‘learning’ again who is relevant to you. Use the arrow on the top left of each post in your news feed to mark interesting posts as ‘Top Stories’. Facebook will then show you more of those types of stories.

fb-stories-joshdotmy

“I see mainly acquaintances in my feed, and less of people I’m interested in/close to”

Solution: Organize your close friends into ‘Lists’. From the main page, use the Lists feature (it’s on the bottom left of your tabs, below Pages & Groups). Click more, then make Lists to add in your friends (eg college mates, close friends, ex-girlfriends, hot chicks you met in clubs etc). That way you can keep track of friends by group.

fb-lists-joshdotmy

“That real time feed keeps moving. It’s annoying!”

Solution: Resize your window horizontally. It will disappear. Or hide the chat sidebar (it’s the button on the bottom right of your screen)

fb-newsticker-joshdotmy

“I find the constant changes stressful! Why can’t things stay the way they are?”

Solution: Try not to worry so much, because change is inevitable, and its best to choose to deal with change positively and resourcefully. Taking control will be your gain, getting angry will be your loss.

Having already conquered three cities this year, the country’s number one clubbing phenomenon, H-Artistry ‘The Global Art of Mixing’ will be storming through a further two cities on July 6 and 9. After capturing the imagination of more than 2,500 clubbers back in April, H-Artistry returns once again to Penang (Sixty9ine Mansion, Batu Ferringhi – July 6) and Kuala Lumpur (Mist Club, Bangsar – July 9). This time around, with an expected crowd of over 2,000, the upcoming H-Artistry party promises to enthral party-goers to two explosive partying experiences where sights, sounds, and tastes collide.

I’ve been to all but one of the Hennessy Artistry parties so far, and I have to tell you that it’s always pretty awesome.

With collaborative performances, visual stimulations and new digital interactions, H-Artistry promises to surprise folks with a contemporary clubbing platform that is bold, daring and fresh, culminating in the ultimate blend of urban sounds and cultures that come together through electrifying performances that will leave guests awestruck and craving for more.

For an idea of what to expect (besides of course, great drinks all night!), check out this video that I shot and edited of Hennessy Artistry back in April. It shows:
Hennessy Mixing Bar, Hennessy Music Mix Synth (the music blocks), Hennessy iMix Challenge (iPad game) & the Hennessy Interactive Photowall

Party-goers who register themselves on the official H-Artistry Facebook fan page for both the upcoming parties in Sixty9ine Mansion and Mist Club will also be receiving a new Hennessy ID Tag (a wristband equipped with radio frequency identification – RFID – technology) which will allow them to log on to their respective Facebook accounts and automatically post their activities as status updates whenever they scan their wristbands onto a Hennessy ID reader located at each Hennessy Mixing Zone booth. For example, registered guests will be able to instantaneously tag photos of them on their Facebook profile simply by scanning their wristbands on a reader whenever they have had their pictures taken at the Hennessy Interactive Photowall.

Revellers can also keep a look out for the Hennessy Mobile Photo Tagging team who will be making their way around the venue to snap pictures of party-goers. Photos that are taken can then be edited to resemble a magazine cover whereby guests will also be able to instantaneously tag their pictures on their respective Facebook profiles.

group-pic

On the music front, the event will see a blend of musical talents from Malaysia and Denmark belting it out on a night that promises to be bold, daring, and fresh, ultimately, culminating in a blend of urban sounds and cultures that come together through electrifying performances that will leave guests awestruck and craving for more.

Headlining the line up at the upcoming H-Artistry party is German electro/house duo, the Beautiful Beat Girls. The group comprises of Meliah, the globetrotting vocalist of the duo who have performed at some of the best clubs in the world alongside some renowned DJs, and DJ/producer Dinakeen whose technical proficiency and ability in heating up any dancefloor has helped place the Beautiful Beat Girls as a dynamic performing duo. Making their debut on the H-Artistry stage, this German electro/house outfit is ready to infect the dance floors of Sixty9ine Mansion and Mist Club come July.

Check out the video below of their introduction:

Staying true to H-Artistry’s innovative approach in blending musical genres of the East and West, the upcoming party will also see Malaysia’s very own acclaimed singer-composer Reshmonu take on the famed H-Artistry stage. Multi-talented and award-winning Reshmonu forged a career in the Malaysian English music scene virtually single-handedly, going from humble beginnings as a sound engineer to becoming one of the most recognizable faces in the Malaysian English music industry over the past five years. Known for his talents in singing, writing, producing, arranging and engineering his own music, he has since established himself as the premier English Language market entertainer in Malaysia. Among some of his standout credentials include performances for Alicia Keys, Prodigy, Pussycat Dolls and Ryan Star of RockstarSupernova. Armed with his R&B prowess, Reshmonu will be looking to heat up the H-Artistry party in Sixty9ine Mansion and Mist Club.

Joining him on the H-Artistry stage is Malaysian progressive trance group TRIMIX. For the duo (Droolotte Tasha and Samuel Dan), TRIMIX symbolises the mixture of three different compounds into one, resulting in an ecstatic result. With this in mind, their sets are designed to be unique, exquisite and truly phenomenal. TRIMIX’s wide-ranging sounds cover progressive, tech and trance and unleashes phenomenal energy through its beats. Set to bring a whole new experience in progressive trance, TRIMIX will be looking to conquer the dancefloor at H-Artistry through some of the most infectious and addictive tunes the country has ever heard. Bringing to life its trademark repertoire, ‘The Global Art of Mixing’, revellers can also expect to be blown away by H-Artistry’s trademark special collaboration performances by all three acts. Truly one-of-a-kind, party-goers can look forward to experiencing the blending of music at its best.

With more than just music reverberating through the clubs’ walls, H-Artistry ‘The Global Art of Mixing’ is where music and drinks find the perfect match. The blending of different musical genres provides the core essence, while the versatility of Hennessy V.S.O.P mixed in the form of its signature long drinks provides the inimitable spirit to complete the distinct ultimate clubbing experience.

A global musical phenomenon, H-Artistry ‘The Global Art of Mixing’ parties also takes place in some of the largest cities around the world which includes New York, Shanghai, Taipei, and Los Angeles. Among some of the big names who have performed at these international parties includes Ciara, The Roots, Mike Posner, Alexandra Burke, Harlem Yu, Jay Chou, Jacky Cheung, and Sammi Cheng. The parties in Malaysia have also been nothing short of impressive. Locally, the event has in the past, featured a host of star-studded performers such as Flo-Rida, Kardinal Offishall, Shayne Ward, Boys Like Girls, The Ying Yang Twins, Da Mouth, and many others.

Passes to the H-Artistry ‘The Global Art of Mixing’ parties are by-invitation only. To stand a chance to be invited to these upcoming exclusive events, visit H-Artistry’s official Facebook fan page at www.h-artistry.com.my/facebook to register. Registrations close 1 week before the actual date of the first event.

Alternatively to receive updates about the upcoming parties follow H-Artistry on Twitter: www.h-artistry.com.my/twitter. Both the H-Artistry parties in Sixty9ine Mansion & Mist Club are strictly open to non-Muslim guests aged 21 years and above only. ID verifications will be carried out at the door.

I haven’t updated this in a while…AGAIN. So here’s a BIG update - just let me know what you’ll like to see more of and I’ll be posting more on what happened. So it’ll be split into Parties, Events, Birthdays & Daytime Stuff (as in, the stuff that doesn’t happen at night)

Let’s start with the Daytime stuff:

First off, this year, Advertlets sponsored the World Bloggers & Social Media Summit. Very happy to be there. Even happier knowing which other company we replaced as Official Blog Advertising Partner. It was a great event, amazing insights,  our booth was one of the most visited (it was either our showreel, my good looks or the fabulous promoters we had), and we got lots of great feedback on our event. The hashtag for the event trended on Twitter locally (#bloggersummit) in Malaysia, higher than even the commentary on the Anonymous hacking attacks on Malaysians sites. Happy to know also that most of the negative comments came either from the following a) people with a stake in some other blog advertising company. b) people who weren’t there. c) both a & b.

You’ll notice that I’ve cut my hair too. Like it?

There was also a trip to Cherating for our client Holiday Villa, where Advertlets Bloggers took part in a sand sculpting competition. Predictably, we did not win.

You may not have seen him, but you’ll definitely be hearing a lot of him on Hitz & Astro very soon. He’s got a new single out, called “Dirinya Sebenar”. It’s a great track, and I’m not just saying it because I’m in the music video. lol :)

You might not know Joel, but you may have bought a voucher or two from Groupon Malaysia, formerly known as Groupsmore. He still won’t tell me how much he made from the deal. Haha.

Hello, Beliebers :) I heard that Justin Bieber tickets are all sold out. Well, I’ve gotten a pair of Justin Bieber Pink Zone tickets worth RM196 in total!

I’ll be running a little contest here to give out the tickets!

Here are the contest mechanics:

1. Invite 30 friends to like this page. (http://facebook.com/joshlimblog)

2. Write a comment on this note why you deserve to win. As long as you want it to be.

3. Tweet out a link to (http://bit.ly/ilovejoshlimandjustinbieber) on your Twitter account.

4. You must also post a link to your tweet (get it by clicking on the date) on this FB note.

The winner of this pair of tickets will be the one with:

a) The most likes on your comment on this Facebook note.

b) The most retweets of their tweet (ONLY NEW-STYLE RETWEETS WILL BE COUNTED. Do not take part if you do not know what a new style retweet is)

Terms

1. Given who I am and the company I work for, this contest is open only to Advertlets Bloggers. :)

2. You must collect the tickets from me around PJ before 4PM on 21st April 2011. At the venue itself is possible as well, however I will tell you this is risky - the venue is big and mobile networks are likely to be congested.

3. Contest closes 20th April 2011, at 11PM.

* This contest is not affiliated with Tune Talk. I paid for the tickets myself btw. Fun fact: Did you know? Josh Lim and Justin Bieber are the same height.

Take part in the contest HERE: http://bit.ly/ilovejoshlimandjustinbieber

(Comments on this blog post will NOT be counted).

How can you NOT know about Brand’s Essence of Chicken? Ever since I was young (which really is not that long ago.) it’s been the staple advert everywhere. In a nutshell, it’s really like chicken soup for the brain.

screen-shot-2011-04-14-at-122954

As you can see, that’s a tweet from 3 months back. I eventually ended up pouring it into another microwave safe cup to heat it up. I’ve been taking Brand’s Essence of Chicken since I was young, just not very regularly.

Later on I found out that you can very safely microwave it, just uncap it first. (30 seconds on medium-high).

It is important to note that no one on my Twitter list was particularly helpful, giving me lots of silly suggestions. But anyway…

dsc_1249

Now they’ve come up with this 14 day challenge, which is conveniently, the number of bottles they have in a box!

So here’s the thing, I’m gonna take on the Brand’s Essence of Chicken 14 day challenge to see whether this stuff will make me smarter and all that jazz. I doubt I will develop telepathy, but who knows. As I’m sure you guys know, I’m an avid party goer, and I’m hoping that drinking some healthy stuff for once will offset my alcohol intake.

As BrandsWorld.com.my puts it - “In today’s highly competitive workplace, knowing how to work smart is more important than working hard. What do you need to do to become smarter? What do you need to do to become smarter?”

As the Managing Director and all-round “kuli” of Advertlets, staying sharp is pretty essential as I have to make decisions on a regular basis. And well…the brain is like a muscle - the more you flex it, the better it gets. Being sharp and able to answer quickly is also important - I get asked questions like “Why would advertising on blogs work? Shouldn’t I advertise in the newspapers instead?”, or…”I don’t read blogs. People read blogs meh?” so I need to have smart, logical answers to counter them. (And the answers are: “Ask an 18-25 year old when was the last time they read a newspaper”, and “600,000 Malaysian readers of Advertlets blogs a day would disagree. A lot of people do, and you cannot base “me and my 5 friends” surveys to apply to everyone in Malaysia :)”

Enhancing my mental capability is also something I do on a regular basis - I actually play a few quick rounds of a version of “Scrabble” as soon as I wake up, most days. It’s called WordsWithFriends, and you should check it out. Not many people are “clear” (as opposed to “blur”) when they just wake up, so I’m actually pretty happy that I manage to come up with good words most days even after seconds of waking up. I think I should be doing even better  after taking more Brand’s. :)

There are an array of benefits surrounding the consumption of Brands Essence of Chicken on daily basis. For example, on the box it says that the ingredients are: ‘Essence of Chicken’, and ‘Caramel’. How can you argue that it’s not good for you, or even that it’s bad for you? Nonsense. The only people who would say it’s bad for you are the Essence of Mongoose fanatics. And think about it; caramel makes everything delicious: Snickers, brownies, ice cream etc. Generally the benefits are two main ones: Concentration & Memory. They actually did a clinical research study in where 175 fourth-year medical students were asked to take a number recall test, and those who did take Brand’s scored higher.

Some product info: A box of  Brand’s Essence of Chicken with 14 bottles will cost you RM67.80, which works out to RM4.80 a bottle.

It seems a bit pricy, but it’s not really - in comparision to other less healthy things you might drink or partake of such as a Red Bull Vodka for RM15. Which I take every weekend, really. Or a pack of cigarettes, which is now RM10 a box.

My current lifestyle is basically like this: Wake up, work, party, sleep. I should emphasize that the ‘sleep’ and ‘wake up’ are really close together. So it’ll be good to have something to offset my unhealthy lifestyle. I’m now on my 4th day, so it’s a bit too early to tell. But…

I’m going to let my blog readers tell me how they want me to challenge my mental capabilities over the next few days!

1. Some suggestions: Give me riddles to figure out. Or ask me to beat your score at Typing Maniac or Zuma Blitz.

2. Here’s a challenge for you: “Why are manhole covers round?” Give me your best answer.

Drop your comments with suggestions!

The best answer will win:

a) 1 Box of Brand’s Essence of Chicken with 14 Bottles

b) A hug from Josh Lim if you are female, a high-five if you are male.

Last Saturday, I headed down to the Xplay Party @ Opera in Sunway with a couple of bloggers!

dsc02282

I got a very appropriate shirt for the occasion. Also, note the lightning bolt belt.

dsc02288

Met Naomi Tham there. She has thankfully gained weight! And shifted to KL :)

dsc02314

One of the main attractions that night was DJ Yasmine & DJ Jessica from Indonesia.

dsc_3411

dsc_3447

Here’s the thing: Apparently our table was right next to them. I was wondering who these two hot ladies were when I first settled in to the table, and then when I saw them leaving to go downstairs and play I realized - damn, they are the DJs for the night. Should’ve taken a pic with them.

Got to know their friends though - the ladies below apparently bring in DJs from overseas to KL.

dsc02393

I went around snapping pics as well as enjoying the free flow of beer. Nice to see that many dressed up for the occasion in blue and purple.

dsc02359

I wonder who blue polka dot girl is.

dsc02356

And of course, no party report on josh.my would be complete without one of these kind of pictures :)

dsc02415

More on the acts that night: A close up of of DJ Jessica. On a related note, I have never had an Indonesian girlfriend, but I am now considering it…

dsc02373

This is Altimet, the rapper.

dsc_3459

Very nice guy. I remember him complimenting my Nike Air Force Ones before, and for a brief moment, I realized that a rapper had complimented my shoes. That is some street cred.

dsc_3457

img_3540

And of course, Lapsap playing throughout the night!
