Let’s start this post in reverse chronology. The past few days have seen me exploring around Seoul as well as attending the various networking events organized by the Seoul Promotion Program. There was quite a memorable trip to the Seoul N Tower - Seoul’s version of the KL Tower :) It was really quite beautiful - I’ll be writing a full post on it later, but here are some previews:

joshkorea_dsc04599

The reception:

joshkorea_dsc04602

Me with some really lovely Korean ladies. Yes, most of them do look pretty damn good. The pop culture samples you’ve seen (eg Wonder Girls, Girls Generation, Hyori Lee, etc) isn’t quite too far off from the reality. I am…shocked. But pleasantly.

joshkorea_dsc04647

A picture at the peak with me, Rebecca, Jin Sook (an SPP representative) as well as a good looking dude from Canada.

joshkorea_dsc04639

Before the trip to the tower, we had dinner by the lakeside -

joshkorea_dsc04517

Awesome view of the lake from the restaurant balcony:

joshkorea_dsc04576

A Korean jazz band played as entertainment. Lead singer was really stunning. Reminded me of a Korean movie I’ve seen where the heroine somehow sings with a jazz group in a bar. Damn I forgot the title though.

joshkorea_dsc04558

The day before that was also another networking night - panorama shot!

joshkorea_dsc04428

Seoul’s night skyline is…surreallistically beautiful.

joshkorea_dsc04435

Malls are heavily populated even late at night:

joshkorea_dsc04424

Lastly here are some interesting Seoul quirks…a special pillow menu at the hotel I was staying, Coex Intercontintal Hotel!

joshkorea_dsc04450

Energy drinks you can’t find anywhere else:

joshkorea_dsc04482

And this last one is…like…wow. I usually smoke Kent, but I guess the only way you can smoke Kent in High Definition is in Korea :)

joshkorea_dsc04457

More soon! Seoul N Tower really deserves its own post, it will be up too!

Quick post. I’m currently writing this from the COEX Intercontinental Hotel in Seoul, Korea. I’m here on a sponsored trip from MDEC for business matching - Malaysian + Korean businesses. Anyway, it was a long flight (6+ hours) and I just touched down today at 7AM. I then spent most of the rest of the day walking around the Seoul International Cartoon & Animation Festival (SICAF 2010). Here goes! (pics are fresh, just from 2 hours ago!)

The Bandai booth was pretty impressive: Robots, promoters and all!

joshkorea_dsc04167

joshkorea_dsc04170

joshkorea_dsc04172

Don’t know who this guy is, but he’s cute :)

joshkorea_dsc04387

Me testing out a cool Augmented Reality thing. Hold up the postcard to the webcam (the postcard has a special printed bar code on it), and it will ‘project’ images. Cool thing is that it changes perspective according to how you move and angle the card.

joshkorea_dsc04292

Another cool thing I tried was a gesture based navigation system. It was built by the guy demoing it in the picture below. It’s kind of like a Nintendo Wii controller thing (move your hand left and right/up and down) to effect what goes on screen. However, it’s without having a physical controller :)

joshkorea_dsc04302

This is Won Hee who explained to me about the system. Happy to have met someone that speaks English fluently all the way over here :) Apparently, she studied abroad!

joshkorea_dsc04297

I think most of you would be familiar with Domo-kun…

joshkorea_dsc04321

If you didn’t already know, Samsung is from Korea. They have quite a massive presence in Seoul, I saw Samsung Galaxy S ads…4 times! on the way from the airport to the hotel. You probably know their products well enough, so this is a picture of the pretty girl at the booth…

joshkorea_dsc04236

A motion capture thing (It’s how they plot out character animations in films such as Avatar). They are waving some sticks that translate to movement on screen. More on that later.

joshkorea_dsc04345

Lastly I leave you with an angry chicken figurine and his friends.

joshkorea_dsc04375

More soon! There’s a welcome party for Malaysian and international delegates tonight that I gotta get ready for. Should be fun. Stay tuned for more, I aim to blog daily/live if I can :)

Last weekend was awesome, this particular night being one of them. After viewing the Argentina vs Germany match at Ecoba, a couple of us headed down to Rootz. That’s Sabrina, my date for the night who got a rare night off. You’ll notice that these photos look slightly different from the ones usually - that’s because I was test driving the new Sony NEX, on loan from Sony.

rootzjosh_dsc9906-2

Regarding the photos, the aspect ratio in particular is interesting, I think it’s 16:9 (widescreen, like movies) instead of the usual 4:3 ratio. This photo was taken on the way to Rootz. Colors turned out quite nice - this is near Maison btw. Generally the cam performs quite well under low lighting, but I’m still learning the settings to get everything in focus (you’ll notice that some pics are blurry).

So then after we arrived at Rootz…That’s Sabrina, Donovan (a new addition to Advertlets, and a Facebook newbie too) and his friend Yenny.

rootzjosh_dsc9915

Yenny seemed quite shy, but she seemed to be very well prepared to pose in the background even while I took a pic of Sabrina.

rootzjosh_dsc9908

Met Darynne there as well.

_dsc9909

The lovely Cay Kuijpers was there too!

_dsc9929
Many, many bottles of Moet & Carlsberg were opened throughout the night. Thanks Jacob!
I like how the sparklers look like a dragon here:

_dsc9917

Josiah (who you may remember from here) was there too.

rootzjosh_dsc9921

And to end off this post, some eye candy for the girls, courtesy of Josiah:

roozjosh_dsc9923

More clubbing pics soon! :) It seems my clubbing nights are just getting better and better…practice makes perfect perhaps :)

So there’s this new thing - the Astro Bplayer that we recently got to find out about through our first campaign with Astro. To launch it, they’ve got some very exclusive content that definitely has an audience…the World Cup 2010!

I can say that I haven’t always been an avid football fan, but this World Cup has definitely been of a lot more relevance, and I’ve found myself watching a lot more football, whether it’s at Kayu Nasi Kandar, Ecoba, Movida or even the Terrace Bar at Zouk…or just at home at my computer on Astro Bplayer! Especially since there are a record number of Asian teams in the World Cup this time. Well, they’ve all been eliminated now, but they were Japan, South Korea & North Korea (who got absolutely humiliated).

Here’s a short overview of the Asian teams in the World Cup (they are all out, but still, it’s a good read)

(That’s me in my Nike Team Korea jersey. Yes, I don’t know enough about football to form a decision, so I’m supporting the teams that somewhat look like us…)

josh_lien_dsc5566

Me in my Team Korea jersey. Yes, that's Lien from here :)

As someone working in marketing, I think its very cool that Astro is doing this - especially since World Cup broadcast rights are not easy to get (Singapore nearly didn’t get the World Cup rights this year!), and this is definitely a very good ‘preview’ to potential Astro customers. If you’re a Maxis customer like myself, you get special benefits (you get to watch even more live matches), make sure you link your account - here’s how you do it.

astro-bplayer-maxis

If you're a Maxis subscriber, do this! :)

Basically you can watch it from anywhere with an internet connection and a browser. I’m using Chrome btw. No special software required, but you do have to install the Microsoft Silverlight player (Microsoft’s answer to Flash - which actually does a better job of video streaming). From the URL bar, the videos are loaded from Akamai HD - which is a broadband video delivery platform.

astro-bplayer-fullscr

Full screen shot of the Astro Bplayer. Notice that I have also blurred out my Chinese name on top, ahaha!

It streamed pretty well on my Streamyx connection (I’m just using a simple 1MB package), and I must say that it seems to have quite a smart adaptive technology - I turned on some heavy downloads (using up about 80-100KBps), and immediately the video quality dropped but the framerate remained
pretty consistent.

It’s free to watch for now, so make sure you drop by to check it out. You can also catch the recaps until the 18th of the month.

There’s a Twitter contest where you can win some really good prizes for watching while tweeting about the World Cup promoting Astro Bplayer along the way.

(Screenshot of instructions from the website)

Prizes include:

bplayer-prizes

Prizes include a 42" LCD TV 3 laptops and RM100 movie vouchers (that's roughly 10 movies).

Give it a try. You never know if you might win it. I can’t join since I’m an Advertlets employee working on the campaign with Astro, but feel free to pass me the 42″ LCD TV if you win…

Just a few hours ago, we Advertlets Bloggers attended the launch event and premiere screening of Toy Story 3, sponsored by TM at Mid Valley Megamall! It was quite a blast :)

dsc01622conv

The event started with an introduction by Azura, Disney Buzz host.

dsc01602conv

Followed by a short speech by TM Net CEO Jeremy Kung. TM was the presenting sponsor for the event.

dsc01634conv

Then, the CEO of Disney Malaysia came up.

dsc01649conv

Then of course, the highlight of the event: Woody & Buzz Lightyear!

dsc01683conv

The costumes were very well done as you can see from the pictures - I believe this were the official costumes imported from overseas.

Since everyone was shy to go up to take pictures, I went up first.

dsc01718conv

And of course, all the bloggers got to pose for an EPIC shot!

nfm-vip-pass-faI was invited by Beiersdorf last weekend to check out a game that they are having at 1 Utama.

Beiersdorf is a global skin care company that you’ve probably never heard of - but you’ve definitely heard of Nivea, Eucerin and Hansaplast. I first got to know of the name of the group that handles all these brands when Advertlets started working with Eucerin.

The setup was done in conjunction with Guardian and other men’s grooming brands. Was quite a huge setup in 1 Utama.

The aerial view of the setup that I took from the 1st floor:

dsc01345

A huge crowd had gathered around the screens. This same crowd would not watch me play later…

Just yesterday, Advertlets Bloggers headed down to Teeq at the Lot 10 Rooftop to witness the launch of the new Sony Alpha NEX 3 and NEX 5!

dsc01036

Here are some pics:

dsc01046

Here’s a closeup of the exploded view of the Sony Alpha NEX. The Sony Alpha NEX is a prosumer camera that delivers DSLR quality in a compact body:

dsc01305

Here are some shots so you can see the size of it. It’s pretty compact - you can basically cover the whole camera with your hands (depending on how you hold it of course)

More soon, this is just a quick post, with the full post to follow soon!

Meantime, check out posts by other Advertlets Bloggers (you guys are fast!)

Here’s something interesting…

I’m going to be arranging testing sessions for Advertlets Bloggers to try out the new Sony Alpha NEX.

Bloggers will be given testing priority by:

a) how soon their post about the event comes up

b) and…in order of them posting a comment on this post :)

Here’s some pictures from the after party:

But first, some at the hotel lobby before heading down to Aristo @ Zouk, the official club of Miss Universe Malaysia 2010.

With Joey Hui and Dalvin Parsh:

And it was time to party!

img_6010

Sarah partied by having a hot dog. Now that the pageant’s over, she can finally eat! :)

This photo is just hilarious:

This is Yvonne Tham.

img_6015

She has small eyes, a small nose, and a big heart :)

img_6018

Of course, at least one photo like this is necessary. I wish I knew all their names (there was free flow), but in the middle is my ex-schoolmate, and to the left of her is Sarah Yap, one of the pageant finalists.

Datin Rebecca had lots of fun that night. Notice the outfit change.

The Miss Universe Malaysia Gala Night was held recently at Royale Chulan on the 15th of May 2010, and I was there together with Advertlets Bloggers. Advertlets is the official partner for Miss Universe Malaysia 2010 this year, and so far we’ve been given very good access to the pageant events.

This is one of 4 posts about the event! (Too many pictures!)

As I had to look sharp (I was presenting the subsidiary title of Advertlets Best Blogger to one of the contestants), I bought a new suit that I’ve been eyeing a while. Surprisingly affordable and very worth it. It’s shiny and Korean popstar-styled :)

I don’t always go to three different parties in a night, but when I do, it’s good to share it here.

I first headed down to the Johnnie Walker Black Circuit Party at Ciao Restorante.

I brought along my Canon D1000 which I had just gotten recently.

Surprisingly, one of the first few people I saw there were Advertlets Bloggers - they were apparently contracted to take pics of the event. Didn’t know till then!

From left: ?? (will fill this in a bit), Eu Veng, and the Sony Alpha Gang: Bryan, Jason, Ewin.

img_3556

Yes I know you guys damn pro, this photo above is too grainy, color balance out, etc etc. Will take some time to get as good as you guys k!

Got inside the venue…

img_3566

There were plenty of drinks all night, it being a Johnnie Walker event and all…

img_3640

img_3736

Dot com guys in suits in the house (from left): Hong from The Malaysian Insider, Chak from Foldees and Josh from Advertlets (duh).

The ladies (Elena’s friend), and Elena Hong from Che Che New York which you may remember from this post.

Clubbing queen Vanessa Gan was there too…

img_3647

This pic is too cute to pass up putting up here. Elena was very entertaining throughout the night.

Recently, thanks to Tune Group, Advertlets bloggers got to attend two very cool events. First off was the Lotus F1 Launch event at Pavilion. We were invited thanks to Tune Money!

My childhood hero Tun Dr Mahathir was there. Regret not getting to shake hands with him. Closest I got to proximity was about 2 metres thanks to extensive security and the crowd. Maybe one day. During my Datukship ceremony. Hopefully.
