I was recently invited to go for a media trip to Penang thanks to Hennessy Malaysia, with other bloggers. Mostly Advertlets Bloggers (10/15), I’m happy to add :) Anyway, check this out - I put together a video of our experiences there! The full post & pictures will be up very soon, meantime enjoy a 2:30 video distilled from over an hour of footage. Hope you like it, and stay tuned for my upcoming full posts on the party, the night out in Penang after that, and Hennessy Artistry 2011 in KL!

(PS: Reduce the video resolution from 720P to 360P or 480P if the video is loading slowly. But view in HD for the full effect!)

Last Saturday, some of us woke up early and some not so early for a futsal session in Subang with the hosts of Castrol Football Crazy! Put together by ESPN/Castrol/Advertlets, it was a great time for 20 bloggers and some staff. That’s us bloggers below!

dsc_2783

The warmup session before the match. It started with some normal warmup moves then got weird towards the end, with host JD leading us to gyrate sexily and more. Haha.

dsc_2336

Team A

dsc_2355

Team B (which I was in)

dsc_2352

And no picture of Team C, lol. Jason say they too lansi to take picture. Haha.

One of the highlights of the match was a ball hitting Dan Khoo’s balls. It hurt a while, but we believe he’s okay, and that this will have no long term impact on his fertility.

dsc_2562

They say when a man gets hit in the balls, the impact is so hard that other men around it can feel it too.

dsc_2569

Here are some of the sexy bloggers that were there too…

cfc2011-22

Other injuries that day included Michelle (middle) being hit in the face by a ball kicked by Bryan. He was red carded, lol.

Referees Adam C & JD gave out plenty of unnecessary red and yellow cards, all as part of the show (It’s Castrol Football Crazy after all). Some of the more hilarious reasons included:

Azrin (Group B) : Azrin got a yellow card for calling Adam C a “referee kayu” . During the half time.

Ewin (Group A) : Ewin got a RED card for not scoring a simple goal.

Bryan (Group C) : Bryan got a RED card for kicking the ball at Michelle’s face.

Jason (Group A) : Jason saved the ball from an attempt from group B and they got awarded a penalty. What? And so many more cards given without any fouls.

And the lovely Castrol girls. I found out later on, that I already have one of them on Facebook. :)

dsc_27811

There was a tweet wall too…over 130 tweets in those few hours! :)

And here’s some celebrity gossip about the hosts of Castrol Football Crazy.

castrol-football-crazy-hosts-adam-and-jd

First off…

dsc01062

JD’s real name is Jason Donovan, like the 80’s singer. Kidding.

His real name is Jason Desmond CHIN. Yes, he is part Chinese. JD is best known as part of “JD and Dilly” on Red FM. He is currently single, and looking. You can look him up on Facebook.

dsc_25821

Adam C’s full name is Adam Johan Carruthers is also part Chinese, part Malay, part English and part monkey. Hahah. I used to stay be Adam’s housemate - so let me tell you this juicy piece of gossip - he drinks a lot…of ginger ale. Haha.

Below, is JD drawing on himself.

dsc_2833

Later on, there was other games: football juggling, and a shoot out challenge. Below is Vernon shortly after he lost control of the ball:

dsc_27162

That’s me below, with Adam defending. Do  you think the ball reached? Tune in to find out! (Showtimes at the end of the post)

dsc_2751

You can see us on air on…Castrol Football Crazy on February 3rd and 10th to watch all the ball-kicking fun we had with Adam C and JD!

Castrol Football Crazy airs every Thursday at 8pm only on ESPN, Channel 812. Also, go and Like the official Castrol Football Crazy Facebook page!

This was our first project with Castrol, and we at Advertlets look forward to collaborating on more crazy events soon. Lastly, I leave you with a picture of Elvina Chua, part of the Advertlets Team and one of our new bloggers :) Elvina would like to remind you: “Remember to fill up with Castrol the next time you service your car!”

dsc_2847

The Kuala Lumpur party boy has returned. After an absence from blogging for about a month…AYAM BEG!! (read it out loud).

It is important to note that EVERYTHING in this blog post here happened within the same day. And was written, photographed, edited and uploaded on the same day too. This is my first post of 2011, and I resolve to be more consistent with my blog updates in future, have many pretty pictures for you, exercise regularly, all in addition to being more of an Epic Lim.

First off earlier in the day, met Bridgette Liberty Yu of pillowtalkpromises at Bangsar Shopping Centre for a discussion. Her friend, JT, a Youtube travel vlogger was there too.

img_7387

Also managed to meet up with a client at the same venue to collect the below gift. Thanks to Holiday Villa for the first CNY gift of the year! Do fan the Holiday Villa page and consider Holiday Villa Group Of Hotels & Resorts for all your accomodation needs :)

img_7740

After that - it was time to head over for the Miss Universe Malaysia 2011 Revelation Press Conference, where Malaysia’s selected representative for 2011 would be announced.

img_7435

I don’t usually get to shoot 3 beauty queens on the same day, but today was an exception. Btw, Advertlets was the online partner for Miss Universe Malaysia 2010, and will continue this year too :)

untitled-1

The thing with Deborah Priya Henry is that she’s incredible to shoot. It is SO HARD to get a bad shot of her. Honestly I can see why the public was so supportive and the judges that she should be the one to represent Malaysia today.

Met my friend Janis there too at the press conference. Love her tattoo. Don’t stare too long though, she’ll kill you.

img_7436

Later in the night, there was the unveiling party :) I realize I look rather pretty in this photo below. Bloggers in the picture are Naomi (in the background, white outfit), of naomitham.blogspot.com, and Magdeline Wang (black dress, right hand side) of mag-a-licious.blogspot.com

img_7488

Serena C was the host for the night.

img_7464

Lavinne & Fay Hokulani. I like how her name sounds like a drink. Like “OMG, I had so many Fay Hokulanis last night!’

img_7543

‘mag-a-licious’ Magdeline Wang with Deborah Priya Henry. Notice they are the same height. I will make a prediction - Magdeline Wang will qualify as a finalist, if not win Miss Universe Malaysia 2012 :) History would have taught you that hot girls usually appear on this blog before winning titles. After all, Yvonne Sim was on this blog too, 1 year before she was FHM Girl Next Door 2010.

img_7605

A woman loudly exclaimed “I want to take a picture with Miss Universe Malaysia!”

She had a very strong resemblance, and I asked her “Aren’t you like, her sister?”. And she said, “Yes!”.

img_7612

They really look similiar. If Deborah Priya Henry doesn’t win this year, I suggest we send her clone sister in the next few years.

And below. Please forgive the stupid chinaman grin I have. The lady with the nice hair and incredibly sharp nose is Patricia Sue Lin Knudsen, one of the potential candidates for this year’s Miss Universe Malaysia 2011 as well. Personally I would have liked her to have been selected. She looks like an exact mix of a Asian and European features. She’s from Denmark btw.

img_7602

Looking at Patricia from different angles gives you a different impression of her ethnicity. Evolution dictates that the further away samples from the gene pool, the better the results. That’s why Pan-Asians are so hot, and people who marry their cousins produce ugly children. This only reinforces my decision to one day marry a Brazillian supermodel, or perhaps, hire one to spawn my future child.

Anyway, back to the topic - the major pageants (World, Universe) are all about women who are tall. As the average height for contestants from other countries is 5′10. Which is unfortunate. I personally would like there to be a pageant for women below 5′5. There used to be a Miss Malaysia Petite pageant, but it was discontinued. Serious. I think it’s a great idea. Last year’s Miss Universe Malaysia 2010 2nd runner up, Vera Hui was excellent - great features, build and speaking skills, but given that she was 5′4, 2nd runner up was the furthest she could go.

Trivia: Did you know? The last Miss Malaysia Petite was Hannah Tan. The pageant was discontinued after that.

Onward….

Have you heard of “Yew Han Baker?” No, it’s not a bakery run by a Chinese man :) It’s the guy on the right, below. Nice chap that I’ll hopefully be shooting again soon, together with the rest of his pop-rock band.

img_7601

Dynas Mokhtar was there too.

img_7617

Deborah Priya Henry OMG so pretty.

img_7564

Pat, below, runs things at this club. Let this be an example to you that you don’t need to have typical Chinese girl long hair to look good. She looks great with this short crop, which she informed me she had just done recently.

img_7500

Magdeline Wang is gonna be famous someday :)

img_7472

Meanwhile, Nadine Ann Thomas, Miss Universe Malaysia 2010…was today revealed as an aspiring hip hop DJ currently under the Kartel label of Joe Flizzow.

Fo shizzle ya’ll.

img_7642

Below is Hafiz of CuteCarry.com, fashion blogger and Kee Hua Chee, celebrity journalist were there at the party too. Here they are in their fabulous outfits.

img_7644

Okay. After that it was onward to the next party at The Hill…which is…wait for it…wait for it…ON A HILL!

img_7646

I was there for the Moet Hennessy Diageo Media Appreciation Night. MHD is a conglomerate that may sound familiar to you. That’s because they are the parent brand for Hennessy, Belvedere, Johnnie Walker, Bailey’s, Glenmorangie, Smirnoff, Moet & Chandon, Veuve Clicquot & more!

img_1673

Mag followed along for the second party of the night :)

img_1720

Nadia Heng (Miss World Malaysia 2010), her friend Cassandra, & Roen, who is one of the owners of The Hill.

img_7716

Big time taiko Jason Ong of mynjayz.com was there too. Damn stylish right his samfu. He must have really good taste, or the person that picked the outfit for him has.

img_7653

Each guest was given chips to use for the card games in a “casino” with “baccarat” and “blackjack”. Those with the most chips at the end of the night won prizes.

img_1696

There was also a very entertaining “beer pong” game, played with liqour of course.

img_7651

I don’t know who this girl is, but she is very photogenic.

img_7664

Helenness Chong is looking stylish with her Takashi Murakami Louis Vuitton bag.

img_7702

Erica Ting does her ‘ting’.

img_7674

And then there’s this random person below la.

img_1724

Last stop for the night was Devi’s Corner for some Maggi and teh ais :)

img_7725

Lastly, here’s yet another picture of Deborah Priya Henry, our new Miss Universe Malaysia 2011!

Recently on the 8th of December, Advertlets Bloggers went down to One World Hotel for the Miss Universe Malaysia 2011/2012 press conference. (Advertlets was the Online Media Partner of Miss Universe Malaysia 2010. Check out the site here)

Andrea Fonseka remains pageant coordinator for 2011/2012, as she was in 2010. Here she speaks more about the bold move to both the 2011 and 2012 pageants next year.

mumo2011pc-6518

For this transition, Miss Universe Malaysia 2012 would be identified and selected by September 2011. This in turn means that the Miss Universe Malaysia 2011 candidate will be crowned by February 2011 to compete at the 2011 Miss Universe Pageant.

mumo2011pc-6543

Above: Andrea Fonseka & Hans Isaac (who will be one the judges)

“We are embarking on a nomination and voting process starting immediately to select our Miss Universe Malaysia 2011 winner,” explained Fonseka.

This is being done through the pageant’s Facebook page, website and through letters that could be sent to the pageant’s offices. The public nomination and voting results would then be combined with the views of a hand picked panel of world-class judges to help select the country’s next representative to the Miss Universe 2011 pageant.

Last Friday, I went with blogger Magdeline “Mag-a-licious” Wang to check out the launch of Che Che New York’s new Hello Kitty collection. You may remember the first post here where I previously covered another launch.

img_33402

Che Che caters to a female audience, so there nothing that I could possibly use myself, but it was a good opportunity to take some happy colourful shots. What do you think of the pics? Personally I think they are quite tastefully done, incorporating the ‘kawaiiness’ of Hello Kitty with the chic style of Che Che New York. Something I would use if I were a girl. Or a ‘fabulous’ guy, if you get what I mean. Colors are mostly from the palette of white, brown, black and pink.

I met Megan Tan, the 8TV Quickie host! (Now I’ve met all of the 8TV Quickie hosts, ahah!)

And in case you’re wondering, I asked her if it’s a good time to be a “Megan”. Please don’t do the same, I’m sure she gets asked it all the time.

Look familiar?

Michie Kin of fashion brand “The Kins”, Natacha Meuneir (wrote about her here previously), Bridgette Liberty Yu, Winnie Loo (of A Cut Above fame), Lavin Seow, Leng Yein (you may know her from the giant marriage proposal billboard that was put up near Tropicana City Mall, or her many pictures).

The models were from Seventeen Magazine featured models, if I remember correctly, as the collection is catered to younger females.

Super overdue :) But anyway, here are the photos from MTV World Stage 2010. Since you’ve probably seen all the pictures of the artists by now, I’ll just show some of the people I met along the way :) Thanks to Celcom for the tickets to the After Party, and thanks to Sony for use of the Sony NEX (all pictures were shot with the NEX-3 with kit lens).

First off, we have Wai Yan camwhoring on the way there…

Who’s cuter? :)

And…upon arriving.

dsc06993

That’s XOXO, Malaysia’s first English girl pop group. Or rather, 3/4 of them. You can check out their fan page here :) If the girl to the right looks familiar, it’s because you saw her in these posts - Dalvin Parsh was a Miss Universe Malaysia 2010 finalist. Here’s another shot of them.

Recently, Advertlets Bloggers were invited to the launch of the Leisure Inn KL. You’ll probably see the banners running too. But here’s a closer look -

Check it out: Advertlets Bloggers & friends at the recent Hennessy Artistry 2010 finale party at the Mines!

Trying out something new here. This was taken by me with a Sony NEX-3, and edited with iMovie (was my first time using the software, took me about 2 hours to edit this). Lighting is a bit bad in some spots, as no additional lighting was used. Hope you like it though!

Regrets:
- Did not capture all the artists/bloggers
- Did not capture MYSELF (argh, how could I forget)

If you wish to tag your friends, the video is here on Facebook: Advertlets Facebook Page - Videos - Hennessy Artistry 2010 Finale with Advertlets Bloggers & Friends

Comments and feedback are welcome!

Every now and then, there will be a post here that doesn’t involve clubbing or alcohol. Wait a minute, it’s a chinese wedding, so there’s definitely alcohol! Anyway, I was especially happy to attend, this being the second blogger wedding I’ve been to in my lifetime. This time, it was the wedding of Advertlets Bloggers Wilson Ng & Rachel Ting, who both write on placesandfoods.com

dsc_3604

We at Advertlets were happy to be there :) From left: Jason Ong, Hanie Hidayah, Josh Lim

dsc_3579

Yes, the bubble wrap casing is cute, isn’t it? Ai Li is fascinated with the iPad …if she gets one, she can call it her AiPad :)

You’ll notice that the photos look slightly different. First time using a Nikon D300 with speedlight on this blog, it was Jason Ong’s camera. Most of these shots here are by me, although Jason took a few too.

Chinese weddings always have awesome food. This was the opening dish:

dsc_3651

Unfortunately I forgot to snap the rest, too busy eating…

dsc_3717

A big group shot of our table…all bloggers one. Okay, well, 80% la.

dsc_3742

Got this good shot of Jason Ong yam-seng-ing.

dsc_3702

Got this at the right moment as they were popping the champagne :) Only wish the other photographer weren’t in the way…

dsc_3685

The one on the right is not Hannah Tan, it is none other than Joanne Kay :)

dsc_3668

I like how the groomsmen wore Mexican wrestler masks.

dsc_3594

First wedding I’ve been to where the opening song before the bride and the groom came in was the “Transformers theme” followed by a WWE Wresting Anthem….then the ‘proper’ here comes the bride song. Interesting.

Below: Wilson & Rachel walking in…

dsc_3638

dsc_3635

Lastly to end the post - some of Wilson & Rachel’s really hot friends! :)

dsc_3750

Lastly, remember to visit www.placesandfoods.com/wedding. If you have 3D glasses, you can view the wedding pics in 3D. Yes, 3D wedding pics. All in all it was one of the most fun weddings I ever attended, and I like how they did quite a few things differently. Gives me some ideas for my own wedding. Which won’t be too soon la :)

Thanks to Warner Brothers, we recently had our FIRST 3D screening! It was none other than Legend Of The Guardians, The Owls Of Ga’hoole. It’s based on a set of popular children’s books, but you don’t need to know that.

Interestingly enough, I really wanted to watch it as it was directed by the same guy (Zach Snyder) who directed ‘300′ and ‘Watchmen’…this is his animation debut. Also, the soundtrack features one of my favourite artists…Owl City :) Amazingly appropriate.

My date for the movie was Jessy…a deep-dimpled friend I haven’t seen in a while and a new blogger (she just started a few days ago). Here she is, making our Advertlets preview screening tickets look good :)

img_8542

Here are some shots of the blogger crowd prior to the screening…

img_8514

As is customary…a group pic of us after the screening.

58682_10150279580505171_796270170_14898206_2161590_n

On the movie itself…I think the owls were translated to screen very nicely. Left: real life owl. Right, animated owl.

tumblr_l8vbzfsioq1qclcx7o1_400legend-of-the-guardians-the-owls-of-gahoole-uk-movie-poster-quad-2-600x448

To sum up the movie, it’s kind of like Lord Of The Rings meets Happy Feet with the slow motion and orange/blue/red stylings of ‘300′ (same director)…all with owls. The film’s running time is 1 hour 30 minutes, which is just about right. A tad slow in the first half, but the second half is definitely enjoyable. The Australian accents feel a bit odd at times - given that most of us are used to American/British accents, but after a while you get used to it, and it does match their characters.

I don’t know about you, but I didn’t quite like the way the Bahasa Malaysia subtitles jumped out at you - can we petition the Malaysian government NOT to make the subtitles pop out, and have them ‘flat’? The owls are cute. You could hear the cinema going “awwww” when the baby owl appeared. Your kids would want the buy the soft toy versions of the owls.

I wouldn’t quite call it a kiddy movie though - there is some good fight scenes, some violence, although there’s no blood and there is definitely some owls that die (at least 2). Don’t worry, won’t spoil it for you which owls die. It feels suitably dark in some places, and the story is deep enough for an adult to enjoy, but its definitely something you can bring your kids to enjoy.

Soundtrack wise, I would have preferred a less orchestral score, and more ‘indie/pop/guitars’ route that the trailer took (the trailer had a very good song from the band ‘30 Seconds To Mars’. Hanie was dissapointed that it didn’t appear in the film. There’s one particularly memorable part where the Owl City song “To The Sky” comes in, a foot tapping-ly happy song written specially for the film.

Humour wise, there are a few good laughs, but don’t expect a laugh a minute comedy. It’s an epic tale, with owls. I can honestly say that I got goosebumps in a few of the more dramatic moments. All in all, a good film to watch in 3D, and it’s definitely one of the better animated films to come out this year together with ‘Toy Story 3′ and ‘Despicable Me. ‘

In conclusion: I watch a lot of films (about 2-3 a week on average, and my tastes are pretty varied), so if I enjoyed it you probably will too :) Overall:

Pros: Animated owls are cute and appealing. Inspirational story. Can be enjoyed by kids and adults.

Cons: Title is too long and prone to confusion (Legend Of the Owls? Legend of Ga’hoole? etc). Soundtrack could be less orchestral. Australian accents are odd.

owl_orly

And…

About the crazy coincedence mentioned in the title…I twitpic-ed this a couple of days back. The chances of a picture of a movie about owls getting a randomly generated URL with the word owl in it is…like…1 in 500,000? Wow. I couldn’t believe it. Either that or Twitpic is becoming self aware, kind of like how Facebook is now creepily detecting faces and suggesting you tag them.

owl-coincedence

This post is missing something before I conclude it…

Maybe some funny pictures of owls?

Post ends!

jasonong_meAdvertlets Blogger Jason Ong REALLY wants to meet Wayne Rooney!

In his own words:

“A brief of what I need to focus on. I’m in the running to meet the famous football player from England and Manchester United, Wayne Rooney in PERSON. I get to PARTY with him, hang out with him, have lunch with him, get his autographs, get some official merchandise, Q&A session and the best part is, I get to play some balls (I have no idea why Jason chose to word it this way) with him on the field.

I’m competing myself with 3 other regional countries in Asia. Singapore, Vietnam and that includes bloggers from Malaysia as well. Fellow friends of mine, I need some of your huge support to support me! I need 10 supporters to support me.”

And well, if you vote for him, I get to take part in a beer party as well, sponsored by Tiger! As I’m part of the support team :)

But okay, if you need a reason, here’s why I think you should vote for him:

Jason Ong is a really good photoblogger - over the past few years he’s been producing some of the best shots from our Advertlets events as well as many others across KL and more. He’s also a pretty decent at shooting video - so having him meet Rooney and cover it will be the next best thing to actually being there. Other than that, he’s a hardcore Manchester United fan - and won’t be asking stupid questions and embarassing us Malaysian MU fans when he’s over there.  Also, lastly - this is a regional contest - wouldn’t you rather a Malaysian win than someone from Singapore, Vietnam or Indonesia?

So here’s what you can do to drop your vote:

  1. Visit his blog at this link: http://bit.ly/MYtigerJO
  2. Drop a comment (comments go towards the score!)

It’s that simple! :)

Recently, I was part of an entourage of Advertlets Bloggers together with Paul Tan and crew to test out the new Honda Freed.

josh_honda_img_7100

Our day started off at Souled Out, in Sri Hartamas. Bloggers gathered there before our drive, and we had a good breakfast before we set off to Putrajaya.

josh_honda_img_7120

We’ve put together an awesome video of the trip, check it out. Featuring sound bites from a few familiar faces and an interesting look at the journey:

josh_honda_img_6979

Motoring journalist and Malaysia’s Jeremy Clarkson Harinder Singh was our guide throughout the trip, together with Paul Tan of Paultan.org.

Each car was outfitted with a walkie talkie for the trip, which was useful in discovering the features of the car and inter vehicle communication (for example - “eh, someone sesat already! turn back!”).

Honda bills the Freed as a “premium 4 seater”. However it technically can fit about 6 people (and 8 if you REALLY squeeze :) As someone who is used to driving a 1.8 liter car, I’m used to a quick pickup. The acceleration power seems to be in mainly in the lower speeds, tapering off at about 100-120 km/h.

The Honda Freed is powered by a Honda 1.5L i-VTEC engine, and the car had about 165KG of people + cargo at the time of driving. So I would say that the acceleration is okay, I can’t exactly compare it to a sports car but its satisfactory for the vehicle class and the number of people that were in the car.

The dashboard has a blue backlight. Interesting material - it doesn’t seem to be a ‘light’ in the conventional sense, but rather looks like e-ink as in its not glaringly bright but its visible quite clearly, as if it were printed on.

The fuel efficiency meter is also a welcome feature, it actually measures how many kilometers you are getting out of your drive - useful for fine tuning your driving habits to squeeze more distance out of each drop.

There are two major differences in positioning - the gearshift is on the dashboard, and the ‘handbrake’ is on the floor. The second one takes a bit of getting used to, but having the gearshift on the dashboard actually makes quite a bit of sense, it frees up some space for you to either store stuff, or be able to walk through to the back of the Freed. The dual layer dashboard is a good idea, and it does give you quite a bit of room to put stuff. I wish it wasn’t sloped downward though - it would be slightly better at a 90 degree flat angle.

One of the Honda Freed’s selling points is the walkthrough cabin. It’s useful if you have kids and need to crawl to the back and change a diaper, for instance.

The Freed starts from RM112,980. The units involved in this test drive were fitted with a sports kit that included door visors and a tailgate spoiler. If you’re considering the long term cost as well, Honda has helpfully put together preventive maintenance rates and costs per thousand km.

More info can be found here. Overall it was a good trip, bloggers had fun in addition to learning about how to do a test drive. Thanks to Honda’s PR company & Honda Malaysia for giving us this opportunity. Meantime, if you’ll like to check out what the rest of the bloggers in our entourage wrote, check it out: -
